Trump admin approves $2.1 billion sale of Patriot interceptors to Ukraine

The State Department said Friday that the Trump administration has approved the sale of $2.1 billion in Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine.

The department said that no American money was spent in the deal and that the sale of 500 Patriot missiles is being funded through donations from Canada, Germany and Norway through a U.S. program.

"This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a partner country that is a force for political and economic stability in Europe," the department said in a release.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has long pushed the U.S. to allow Ukraine to build Patriot defense systems for "winter" warfare. Russia has recently escalated its attacks on Ukraine's infrastructure ahead of the winter.

The department said the defense systems will also include PAC-3 MSE classified and unclassified spare parts, and other related elements of logistics and program support.
