VIDEO: Poland’s President Storms High Court After Pro-EU Prime Minister’s ‘Coup Attempt’

Poland's President Karol Nawrocki returned to Warsaw late Friday and entered the Constitutional Tribunal building early Saturday morning, accompanied by the First President of the Supreme Court, after learning of an attempt to

suspend the Tribunal's sitting leadership while he was abroad. Nawrocki and his allies have described Prime Minister Donald Tusk's attempt to suspend the tribunal's leadership as a "coup attempt."

Nawrocki had been traveling to the West African nation of Senegal when reports emerged that Judge Anna Korwin-Piotrowska had ordered a one-month suspension of Tribunal President Bogdan Święczkowski and his deputy, announcing that she would assume charge. The Tribunal's official channels and the suspended leadership rejected the order, stating that those involved were committing the crime of a coup d'état.

Police deployed around the building amid protests by supporters of the sitting leadership, some of whom cut chains on a gate with a power too. Officers also blocked further entry by Święczkowski and detained three people after objects were thrown.

After learning of the events, Nawrocki ordered his plane turned around and returned to Warsaw. "At a moment like this, the President must be in Poland. I am cutting short my flight to Senegal. I am returning," the president announced in a social media post.

After landing and meeting at the Presidential Palace, Nawrocki traveled to the Tribunal with Supreme Court First President Zbigniew Kapiński. Their motorcade stopped roughly 50 meters from the main gate because of the police presence, at which point Nawrocki walked the final stretch.

At the doorway, several people — including Korwin-Piotrowska and Judge Krystian Markiewicz — stood in the entrance. Video recorded by Markiewicz's colleague Maciej Berek shows Nawrocki moving between the pair while making his way through. "Please step aside," the president can be heard saying.

He then entered the building and made his way up the stairs with members of his protection detail and staff. Inside, Korwin-Piotrowska stated, "We are judges of the Constitutional Tribunal," to which Nawrocki replied, "You are not judges of the Constitutional Tribunal."

The head of the President's Chancellery, Zbigniew Bogucki, told Korwin-Piotrowska she was "carrying out a coup d'état." Staff accompanying the president also asked for keys to the Tribunal's rooms, which was denied.

The Constitutional Tribunal functions as Poland's court of last resort on whether statutes and government actions comply with the constitution. Though not a one-to-one comparison, it fills many of the same roles as the U.S. Supreme Court.

Disputes over its composition date back to 2015, when successive parliaments and presidents differed on judicial selections. After the 2023 change in government, the current parliamentary majority elected several new judges. President Nawrocki, elected in 2025 and aligned with the previous administration's judicial approach, declined to administer the oath to five of them, citing irregularities in their election.

Those individuals arranged oaths in parliament instead. Święczkowski, a former deputy justice minister under the prior government, declined to seat them. On Friday, while Nawrocki was outside the country, Korwin-Piotrowska — one of the judges whose oath the president had not accepted — issued the suspension order, citing the leadership's refusal to convene a full assembly and allow the newly elected judges to participate.

The justice minister requested the lifting of the suspended officials' immunity for potential charges related to blocking the new judges' work. In response, the Tribunal's existing leadership and opposition figures labeled the sequence an illegal takeover.
