Senator Susan Collins' office, based in Biddeford, Maine, has been vandalized with a bloody message on the eve of Election Day.

On Monday night, a pool of red paint that appeared to resemble blood was found on the sidewalk out front of the incumbent's office with the words "BLOOD on her HANDS" scrawled in red at the doorstep.

"This is another incident in a series and the second attempt at our Biddeford office to intimidate the senator and her staff. These tactics are disturbing, but not effective. Our staff is undeterred and on the job," said Katie Brown, chief of staff at Collins' (R-Maine) Biddeford office.

Collins' campaign said Biddeford police are investigating the vandalism.

"This office does constituent service work. This is not a political office," Collins, who has served in the Senate since 1997, clarified when asked about the issue on Tuesday. "It's always there helping people with … Social Security or veterans' benefits or the IRS (Internal Revenue Service)."

"This is so unacceptable and it's unfair to my caseworkers who are working there," she added.

The incident comes as the senator fights for a sixth term in the upper chamber of Congress, facing tough competition from former state Senator Troy Jackson, the Democrat nominee. Heading into Election Day on Tuesday, RealClearPolitics' average has Jackson leading by 3.6 percentage points, rating the race as a toss-up. Emerson, on the other hand, shows Collins leading by two percentage points.

The office was also reportedly defaced in September, when red spray paint was used to write "Trump w****."

Collins also reported that her home in Bangor had been hit with eggs in the same month.
