Senator Mark Warner has won the Virginia Senate race, ensuring his fourth term in the upper congressional chamber.
The race was called for Warner (D-Va.) when 8% of the total votes were counted. He received 55% of the vote, defeating his Republican opponent Bert Mizusawa, who garnered 44% of the votes, according to the Associated Press.
The senator's campaign priorities included promoting "commonsense" gun safety laws, supporting American energy independence, and protecting the rights of federal employees, according to his website.
Warner, who was first elected to the Senate in 2008 and served as the Old Dominion's governor from 2002 to 2006, also ran on improving healthcare, moving toward a universal coverage model, and reforming the immigration system.
Mizusawa, a retired U.S. Army major general with an extensive record of service in both the military and civilian sectors, ran on a platform of ensuring fiscal responsibility and stemming corruption in Congress, per his campaign website.
He also campaigned on lowering healthcare costs, expanding nuclear energy, cutting taxes, and supporting veterans.
