On Jan. 21, 2019, during a live interview at an MLK Now event in New York City, Democrat Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez said: "Millennials and Gen Z and all these folks that come after us are looking up, and we're like, 'The world is going to end in 12 years if we don't address climate change, and your biggest issue is how are we gonna pay for it?' "

In an Aug. 8, 2026 post to Instagram, AOC announced her egg freezing journey. She shared videos administering her first fertility injections from an ABC News green room.
Does that sound like the action of an individual who believes the world is going to end in five years?
Or maybe someone eyeing a run for the White House in the near future?
The soon-to-be-37-year-old socialist representative would go on to clarify after the 2019 comment that she didn't mean the world was, like, literally ending. She said she was referencing an Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report stating that global carbon emissions must be cut in half by 2030 to prevent irreversible, catastrophic environmental damage.
As for the egg freezing, AOC said the process will give her more "control" over her future.
The congresswoman also took aim at sex education, or the lack thereof, in U.S. schools: "We are not taught about our bodies, we are not prepared for our own lives, whether that is in puberty, whether that is in pregnancy, whether that is in perimenopause, menopause…"
And, of course, she used the announcement to take a shot at the Trump Administration's policies on women's reproductive health (i.e. abortion).
"This is a choice that I am making to feel more in control of my life," she said. "If people want to make assumptions about my decision, let them make those assumptions. I feel empowered to make this choice."
In the United States, a single cycle of egg freezing (oocyte cryopreservation) typically costs between $10,000 and $20,000.
She’ll turn 37 in a couple months. If she got pregnant now, it would technically be a geriatric pregnancy. Instead she’s freezing her eggs. This desire to start having children late in life is completely baffling to me. I’ll have kids in theirs 20s by the time I turn 50. AOC… https://t.co/43L4RAAzxJ

1. She’s been with the same guy for years. There is no reason she couldn’t have had kids yet.

2. She will now require IVF or surrogacy to have a baby, which will always come with ethical and health risks that the baby is forced to bear.
3. It is very rare, even via egg… https://t.co/3R2LA6j81G
