"There is nothing more powerful than reuniting a mother with her child after an extended period of time," stated the first lady. "My representative and I are focused on helping facilitate the next reunification of individuals who have been separated from their loved ones because of the war between Ukraine and Russia."
Mrs. Trump's efforts in Ukraine began a year ago with a letter she sent to Russian President Vladimir Putin, dated August 15, 2025.
"Every child shares the same quiet dreams in their heart, whether born randomly into a nation's rustic countryside or a magnificent city-center. They dream of love, possibility, and safety from danger," her letter began.
The first lady urged the Russian president to put the well-being of Russian and Ukrainian children first.
"As parents, it is our duty to nurture the next generation's hope. As leaders, the responsibility to sustain our children extends beyond the comfort of a few," she continued, adding "A simple yet profound concept, Mr. Putin, as I am sure you agree, is that each generation's descendants begin their lives with a purity – an innocence which stands above geography, government, and ideology."
The first reunification took place in October 2025. The second round was in December 2025, with a third in February, a fourth in April and a fifth in July.
Late last month, she remarked, "While diplomacy and peacebuilding are important to this effort, they are surpassed by our collective ability to place children above international disputes. Every reunion is a reminder that compassion, dignity, and family can transcend even the darkest of times: war."
The United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) estimated in February that 2,589,900 children in Ukraine remained displaced. The United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission said Ukrainian authorities reported that 1,972 children had returned to Ukraine since the full-scale invasion in 2022, as of June.
Mrs. Trump and her authorized representative have maintained a line of communication with President Putin and his team, as well as top Ukrainian officials.
