Councillor turns on his own residents for fly-tipping in impassioned TikTok rant: 'Have some pride in where you live!'

A London councillor has turned on his own residents for fly-tipping on residential streets in an impassioned rant on social media.

Newham independent councillor Mehmood Mirza shared a video on TikTok in front of a row of waste, pleading with constituents not to dump household items on the street.

He told residents that they 'can't just blame Newham Council for everything'.

Fly-tipping has long been an issue in Newham, which was dubbed London's 'filthiest borough' in 2021 after more than 160 incidents were reported in a week.

Earlier this year, the council took drastic action and launched a 'Wall of Shame', publishing CCTV footage of suspected offenders caught littering on local streets.

Residents who identify their neighbours in the videos are now eligible for a cash reward of £100.

Cllr Mirza has now blasted his own constituents after becoming increasingly frustrated by years of fly-tipping.

Cllr Mirza is the leader of Newham Independents, the second largest party on the council after Labour, which has no overall control.

Garden chairs, a chest of drawers and a child's swing could be seen on the pavement in the background of the video.

He said: 'I have been fighting for you for the last six or seven years to get a free bulky waste collection.'

Cllr Mirza briefly paused speaking to pick up a child's swing that had fallen down as he spoke.

He continued: 'You know what, you can book it online.'

'Why do you have to do that?' he said, pointing at the fly-tipping behind him.

'You can get six items picked up free of charge.

'Just go online, do your keyroll, book it online and have some pride where you live.

'You can't just blame Newham Council for everything.

'They have been doing it for you, and I am asking for unlimited bulky waste collection.

'You get three times a year, free collection. 'And if you see fly-tipping, please report it.'

The councillor was then seen taking pictures of the waste, preparing to report it to the council.

In a recent statement, Mayor of Newham Forhad Hussain said: 'Fly-tipping has no place in Newham.

'Our residents have told us they want cleaner streets and stronger action against the people who illegally dump rubbish in our neighbourhoods – and that is exactly what we are doing.

'Our new Wall of Shame will make it harder for fly-tippers to hide. If you recognise someone we share, tell us.

'Residents know their streets and neighbourhoods better than anyone. By working together, we can identify those responsible and keep Newham cleaner.'

Newham is not the only borough that has been blighted by fly-tipping.

Officials at Hillingdon Council said they were furious at residents who 'continue to think they can dump rubbish and drive away without consequences'.

Enforcement teams identified a hotspot outside the car park for St Anselm's Church in Hayes, west London, where people have been spotted regularly leaving their bin bags.

The council has posted photos of the culprits on its Facebook page and is asking locals to help them identify those responsible by getting in touch.

Hillingdon announced a fly-tipping crackdown last month, warning residents that they could face an immediate fine of up to £1,000 and possible prosecution.

The borough has crushed the first vehicle linked to illegal dumping locally, after a Ford Iveco flatbed truck was caught leaving waste on a residential road in Ickenham.

The council's anti-social behaviour team located the vehicle using its CCTV network, before seizing it in Hayes, impounding it and crushing it on September 3.

Councillor Adam Bennett, Hillingdon Council's cabinet member for community, environment and enforcement, said: 'Where we have the evidence, we will use every enforcement power available to hold those responsible to account.

'Fly-tipping damages our environment and communities, and there is no excuse for dumping waste illegally when a range of free or low-cost disposal options are available.

'We all have a role to play in keeping Hillingdon clean, so I would urge residents to dispose of their waste responsibly and report any incidents of fly-tipping to us.'
