Dire sign for Trump in once-solid red Florida after MAGA darling Anna Paulina Luna's race remains too close to call

Dire sign for Trump in once-solid red Florida after MAGA darling Anna Paulina Luna's race remains too close to call

Florida Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna's re-election hopes hang by a thread as she barely holds on to her Tampa-area congressional district on Wednesday morning.

Per the Associated Press, the Trump favorite leads her Democratic opponent Leela Gray by just under a percentage point in Florida's 13th Congressional District as of 9:30 EST on Wednesday, a sharp drop from the eight points she won by in 2022 and almost 10 points in 2024.

Despite the tight margin, Luna declared victory on Tuesday night and hailed Trump's pollster Tony Fabrizio.

'Tony Fabrizio is the best pollster in the game. We knew the margin the entire time given the new district and environment. Worth his weight in gold,' she wrote on X.

She insisted that she won despite Democrats outspending the Republican Party in her district.

'I was outspent by millions. Door knocking wins elections. In politics there is no participation trophy. There are only winners and losers. And today, I won.'

Endorsed by Trump, Luna has been one of his most combative allies in Congress, leading a blockade of House business to pressure the Senate into passing his SAVE America Act.

Her hardball tactics over the voting legislation put her at odds with fellow Republicans and threatened to derail other GOP priorities.

In October, Luna also turned her fire on the National Republican Congressional Committee, accusing party leaders of focusing on their own futures rather than defending vulnerable seats.

'I am also getting calls from members wondering what is going on at the @NRCC,' Luna wrote, adding that she was also being asked about leadership races.

'Sounds to me like some in leadership need to focus on winning races instead of gaming their next steak donor dinner,' she added in the subsequently deleted post.

A staffer for the congresswoman told the Daily Mail at the time that she had decided to put off the dispute with party leadership until after the elections.

Elsewhere in Florida, Democrats held on to districts that were redrawn in the mid-decade redistricting push.

Jared Moskowitz held on to his district which contains parts of Miami and Palm Beach. Kathy Castor also defeated her Republican opponent with over 50 percent of the vote.

Moskowitz's seat, which runs from South Beach to Delray Beach, was moved to being contentious after GOP-led redistricting redrew Florida's congressional map.

The Democratic incumbent had been narrowly favored to beat Republican nominee Scott Singer in the midterms.

The congressman also has a track record of working across the aisle with Republicans.

In the House, Democrats need to flip at least three seats to gain control of the chamber.

Republicans currently hold 53 seats in the Senate, and Democrats need to pick up at least four of them to control the upper chamber in the next Congress.

Trump has crisscrossed the country and held a slew of campaign rallies in an effort to drive turnout for Republicans. He visited Kansas and Iowa on Sunday, and held a press conference at the Lincoln Memorial on Monday afternoon.

However, Trump's advisers have privately admitted that he won't bear the blame if Tuesday night's results are disappointing.

'The president can only do so much,' one Trump political advisor told the Daily Mail. 'If we do fall short in the midterms, it's not because of the president's lack of trying or lack of effort.'

Throughout his many campaign stops, Trump has urged supporters at his rallies to act like he is on the ballot as although his name is not, his legacy is, and he does not want to spend his last two years in office as a lame duck.
