Moment thug launches machete attack in local shop as mother and children forced to cower in terror

This is the terrifying moment customers were left fearing for their lives after a machete-wielding thug ran amok in a local shop.

CCTV footage captured 'dangerous' Dale Dean, 27, chasing his victim around the convenience store, in Bolton, Greater Manchester, before slashing him with the eight-inch blade.

As a mother and her two children cowered in terror, police raced to the scene of the 'extremely frightening' incident, just before 8pm on April 5 last year.

Officers discovered a man with serious injuries to his head and shoulder, who was taken to hospital for treatment.

Manchester Crown Court heard the unnamed victim has ongoing pain and suffers problems sleeping following the knife attack.

On Friday Dean, of Manchester, was jailed for six years after pleading guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent, possession of a blade and affray.

The court also imposed an additional 20‑month extended licence period upon his release due to the seriousness of the offence and the danger he poses to the public.

Detective Constable Jordan Brown, of the Bolton Criminal Investigation Department at Greater Manchester Police, said Dean's sentence reflected the gravity of his crime.

'This was a shocking and violent incident that left the victim with serious injuries and caused fear within the community,' the officer said.

'Dean's actions were deliberate, dangerous, and showed a blatant disregard for the safety of others.

'Dean used or threatened unlawful violence, causing significant fear to those nearby, and was found to be carrying a machete without lawful reason.'

We welcome the sentence, which reflects the gravity of the offences. Our officers will continue to take decisive action against those who carry weapons and commit violent offences on our streets.'

The footage, obtained by the Manchester Evening News, shows Dean, dressed in shorts and a big black coat, casually standing by the till, waiting in line behind a mother and her two children, apparently about to buy a pack of baby wipes.

However, soon after he pays two men enter the shop and Dean runs across the aisle,  charging at them with the huge blade which had been hidden inside his coat.

The men can be seen trying to block Dean by throwing a shelving unit into his path.

He then slashes with the machete towards them, before leaning over the counter repeatedly raining down blows with the knife, while at the same time pushing shelves of goods onto the floor.

Dean, who has a distinctive tattoo on his left calf, then climbs on top of the counter and again lashes down with the blade before making off.
