Republicans Lose House and Senate

Republicans take a beating

Cartoon published 11/04/2026

Republicans got clobbered last night. There's no sugarcoating it. They lost the House and the Senate. As of this writing, Democrats gained roughly 25 House seats and 7 Senate seats

.

Trump is still President for two more years. That means gridlock and a whole lot of vetoes. Democrats can pass whatever they want through Congress. Without a two-thirds majority in the Senate they cannot override a veto. They also cannot remove the President. The phone and the pen are still on the desk in the Oval Office. Executive orders do not require a Democratic majority.

This was not the result anyone on our side wanted. It is also not the end of the country. Midterms almost always punish the party in the White House. Obama's Democrats lost 63 House seats and 6 Senate seats in 2010. Clinton's Democrats lost 54 House seats and 8 Senate seats in 1994. The pattern is real, but the outcomes vary.

What changes in practice is limited. Democrats do not have the votes to force their agenda past a veto. They do not have the votes to impeach and convict. Most of what they pass will die the same way bills died for the last two years. The difference is the noise level.

Calm the emotions for a minute and look at the actual math. Nothing gets done without Trump's signature. That is the reality for the next two years.
