Michigan Democrat Rep. Haley Stevens: Why I'm Endorsing Republican Mike Rogers for Senate

Democrat Michigan Representative Haley Stevens announced Sunday that she is endorsing her state's Republican Senate candidate – rather than her own party's radical, anti-Israel nominee, Abdul El-Sayed – in order to take a stand against hate.

In a video posted to social media, Rep. Stevens began by addressing El-Sayed's comment that she isn't welcome in his campaign:

"Abdul, said that I was no longer welcome in his campaign and that I should stay away.

"And, he's right.

"And that is why I am endorsing Mike Rogers for the United States Senate."

"I don't belong in Abdul's campaign. I do not stand with Hasan Piker who gets trafficked on our college campuses," Stevens explained, referring to the social media commentator whose radical, anti-Israel statements El-Sayed has refused to denounce.

Michiganders don't support hate, but El-Sayed does, Stevens said.

"I'm here to declare who we are as Michiganders," the Democrat said:

"This is the conscience of the Senate right now and our Michigan moment."

Haley announced her endorsement while standing alongside Rogers at a Detroit church service on Sunday, where she said she now backs the Republican "because we have to stand with country."

Rogers agreed, noting how Jewish Michiganders are being subjected to threats and harassment for exhibiting their faith:

"This is more a statement about standing together against hate and the future of this state and this country than it is anything else."

"And I just want you to know: she reminded me at the end of the call: "Remember, I am still a Democrat," Rogers noted, recalling a phone conversation she had with Stevens earlier in the day.

A particular sore spot for Stevens is El-Sayed's refusal to condemn an outside political action committee's ad blaming Israel for higher grocery store prices. Rep. Stevens is Protestant, while her fiancé is Jewish.

Rep. Stevens isn't the only Michigan Democrat rejecting El-Sayed in favor of Republican Rogers.

"He defended a terrorist attack, he proudly featured an endorsement by Tucker Carlson in his ads, he regularly traffics in antisemitism, he chooses the enemies of America over our allies, he refuses to condemn extremists and cozies up to them, the list goes on and on."

"To the 727,758 Democrats who voted for Haley Stevens in the primary, you have a home with us. We remain proud Democrats who will vote for Democrats up and down the ballot, with the exception of Senate. We're putting country over party and voting for Mike Rogers. You should too."

While El-Sayed insists he is not a Democrat Socialist, his policy goals mirror those of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and he has been endorsed by the likes of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.).
