Supermarket freezers get hacked again across Europe ... and on US military bases??

This is becoming a pretty serious problem.

Supermarket fridges and freezers in Sweden, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Estonia were apparently victims to cyber attacks, which left their temperatures at a whopping 122 degrees Fahrenheit.

Someone (or some AI thing) remotely accessed the refrigeration systems and turned them into heaters. This same thing happened last month in France, as we reported at the time.

Here's the NYP with more on the attacks:

The ICA Kvantum branch in Sjöbo in southern Sweden wrote on its Facebook page that its fridges and freezers had been hacked and set to 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit). It said it was working to discard the affected items.

The Coop chain said that six of its stores in central Sweden had problems with their fridges and freezers, TT reported, though it didn't immediately have details.

The Delhaize chain said that an "IT incident" had affected refrigeration systems in several dozen of its stores, mostly in Belgium but also a few in neighboring Luxembourg.

No group has claimed responsibility yet, but the attacks appear to target older systems.

Regardless, this is pretty scary when you think about our food supply. It almost seems like the beginning of one of those end-of-the-world movies.

"In the affected stores, the range of fresh and frozen products is temporarily somewhat limited. Our distribution centers are operating normally, and there has been no disruption to deliveries to our stores," spokesperson Sarah De Meester said.

The Carrefour supermarket chain in Belgium said a "cyberattack targeting refrigeration installations only had an extremely limited impact," affecting 15 of its more than 700 stores.

In Estonia, a company that makes the affected technology said that one of its clients had been hit by a cyberattack in which attackers accessed a computer controlling refrigeration and turned up the temperature to 50 degrees Celsius, public broadcaster ERR reported.

It's not just supermarkets that are being hit.

Last week, it was revealed six U.S. military bases have also been hit by hackers who downed their refrigerators (what a time to be alive).

The late August malfunctions in the United States affected at least six commissaries — on-base stores where military personnel buy their food — according to a Reuters review of the military bases' contemporaneous Facebook posts and website updates. In at least one of the cases, the freezers did not simply stop working; the cooling units' temperatures were cranked up overnight, yielding mounds of wilted or melted food in the morning.

We should probably disconnect our refrigerators from the internet!
