Democrat Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy was hospitalized after suffering from a stroke, a spokesperson for the senator announced.

Murphy (D-Conn.) is not up for reelection on Tuesday, as his term runs through 2031. However, the Senator has been traveling the country to campaign for Democrat candidates, making recent stops in Michigan, Minnesota and Florida.

On Sunday, Murphy, 53, allegedly started experiencing numbness in his arm while at his son's hockey game, according to a statement from his chief of staff, Allison Herwitt.

"He was taken to a local hospital, where it was discovered he had experienced a stroke," Herwitt said. "He was transferred to Johns Hopkins for further monitoring and is responding well to treatment. The doctors are encouraged by his progress, he is awake and alert, and we are optimistic he will make a full recovery."

"The doctors are encouraged by his progress," she added. "We are optimistic he will make a full recovery."

Murphy was elected to the House in 2006 and to the Senate in 2012.

A high-ranking member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Murphy has positioned himself as one of the Democrat Party's primary voices advocating for stricter gun control laws. Because of his high-profile advocacy, political observers view him as an ambitious figure aiming for senior Senate Democrat leadership or a potential 2028 White House run.
