President Donald Trump blamed Texas Governor Greg Abbott's defeat in the midterms on Abbott becoming a "RINO" (Republican in name only) in recent months.
"If Greg Abbott, the Governor of Texas, hadn't become a RINO in the last six months of his Political Life, he wouldn't have lost. He went back to his original formula, and it wasn't pretty!" Trump posted on Truth Social after Tuesday's election.
Abbott (R-Texas), who is currently serving his third term as governor of the Lone Star State, lost his bid for a fourth term to Democrat challenger Gina Hinojosa (D-Texas) by roughly seven percentage points with 99% of the vote counted, according to the Associated Press.
Hinojosa will be Texas' first Democrat governor in more than 30 years, and the state's only third female executive in its more than 180-year history.
During his concession speech, Abbott stated that leading Texas had been "the greatest honor I've ever had," and asserted that he would support Hinojosa and her team during the transition period.
