Mike Johnson Hits Send On Trump Impression. Then He Looks Over His Shoulder.
"What I was gonna say before I just ruined my career ..."
Virginia Kruta Listen Listen 3 minHouse Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) launched into an impression of President Donald Trump while speaking at a rally in Dubuque, Iowa, on Sunday — only to realize that his toughest critic was standing right behind him.
Trump smiled quietly as Johnson recounted a typical phone call from the White House, complete with voices — until Johnson realized that the president was standing right there and immediately dialed it back.
"[Trump] doesn't sleep at all, you understand that?" Johnson began. "The man calls me at like one o'clock in the morning and also at 5:00 a.m.! 'Mike, are you sleeping?!' No, sir, of course not, sleep is for sissies!"
"What's on your mind, Mr. President? 'I don't know, let's talk about—'" Johnson turned and looked over his shoulder then, realizing that Trump was standing right there. "I'm not gonna do the impression in front of you. I'm sorry, I didn't plan that!"

The audience roared with laughter and Trump just smiled as Johnson took a bow.
"Imitation is the greatest form of flattery," Johnson continued when the applause died down. "We're never going to have a president like this again. God bless him, God bless the president. Thank you."
The cheers immediately erupted again.
"What I was GONNA say before I just ruined my career with the impression —" Johnson laughed along with the audience before continuing to make his point, namely that he'd been traveling "nonstop" ahead of the election — and that Trump had done the same without appearing any the worse for wear.
Trump has made dozens of stops across the United States in a bid to help Republicans keep control of the House and the Senate after Tuesday's general election.
The GOP received a surprise boost on Sunday when Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI) announced her endorsement of former Rep. Mike Rogers (R-MI) for the open U.S. Senate seat in Michigan. Stevens lost a close primary race to Democrat Abdul El-Sayed and voiced concerns about his associations with communist streamer Hasan Piker when she threw her support behind Rogers.
Following her announcement, her fellow Democrats tore into Stevens and said that she was "betraying" the party. Members of her own staff resigned, lashing out at her and throwing their support behind El-Sayed instead.
