Halloween Presidential Jet Flyover Spooks D.C. And Halts Airport Traffic

Halloween Presidential Jet Flyover Spooks D.C. And Halts Airport Traffic

What was meant to delight White House trick-or-treaters turned into a jolt for people across Washington—and a brief interruption at the capital's busiest airport.

During Thursday evening's Halloween event, a presidential aircraft made two low passes over the White House. President Trump and first lady Melania Trump watched from the grounds as the jet roared overhead.

For families on the South Lawn, it was an enormous surprise. For residents and travelers outside the gates, it came with far less explanation.

The White House posted footage of the pass and called it a special Halloween flyover. The video shows a large four-engine aircraft crossing the sky above the event.

Military Times reported that the jet was a Boeing 747-8i and that the FAA had coordinated the flyover. The agency declined to tell the outlet when it first learned of the plan.

Military Times said an AlertDC notice warned residents shortly before the passes over the National Mall area. Its account also described the jet flying below the height of the Washington Monument in some parts of the city.

The outlet pointed to another reason the sight unsettled people: the fatal 2025 collision between a passenger plane and an Army helicopter near Reagan National Airport. That tragedy killed 67 people and remains a vivid memory in the region.

The report also clarifies a small but telling technical point. The airplane used by the president is designated "Air Force One" only when he is aboard an Air Force aircraft; on Thursday he was on the ground watching it pass.

The D.C. Council voiced a very different reaction from the White House, saying the low pass startled people and that the public had little warning.

The Washington Post reported that an AlertDC notice went out at 5:24 p.m. and that the plane came over the area roughly 20 minutes later. Flight data put the jet between about 400 and 1,000 feet during its passes.

The Council described the notice window as 15 minutes. The published AlertDC timestamp and the reported time of the first pass put it closer to 20 minutes—a short warning either way for an unusually low 747 over a city with highly restricted airspace.

The FAA told the Post the flyover had been coordinated with the agency and that it imposed a brief ground stop at National. That explains the operational response even as the public reaction exposed a communication problem.

The Post also described residents who said they mistook the sound and sight for something dangerous. In Washington, where memories of the September 11 attacks and the fatal 2025 midair collision near National remain fresh, that alarm is understandable.

One local reporter's account added another measure of how the surprise played beyond the White House grounds: emergency responders were dispatched after a call about a possible aircraft accident.

The Daily Beast reported on the dispatch account from local journalist Andrew Leyden. According to that account, D.C. Fire units went to investigate a possible aircraft incident, then were returned to service after the dispatcher advised that the presidential plane was maneuvering.

That does not mean an aircraft accident occurred. It means the unusual flight looked and sounded alarming enough that someone called for help and responders initially treated the report seriously.

The White House video presents a joyful scene: children in costume, the president and first lady watching, and a jet drawing a dramatic line across the evening sky. The dispatch account captures the same event from outside the security perimeter, where people had little time to understand what they were seeing.

A spectacle can be coordinated with aviation authorities and still leave residents startled. The flyover's emergency call and airport ground stop show the difference between planning a surprise for an invited crowd and preparing the rest of a city for it.
