President Trump Discusses His Strategy If Democrats Take Congress

President Trump said in an interview that he would become "Mr. Veto" if Democrats take control of Congress after the midterm elections.

"Well, if that happens, I guess I'll become Mr. Veto. I'm not going to let them ruin it," Trump said.

"And then at some point, we'll probably make deals. That's what's happened to me. This wouldn't be the first time you'll have a president, and he won't have the House or the Senate," he continued.

The Hill shared further:

This comes as Decision Desk HQ, The Hill's partner, predicts Democrats will "likely" win the House, giving them an 83 percent chance of winning and Republicans 17 percent. In the Senate, Democrats have a 63 percent chance of regaining control, while Republicans were given a 37 percent chance.

Trump enjoyed a GOP-controlled Congress for the first two years of both of his terms, but Republicans lost control of the House in 2019. In that time, he threatened to veto multiple high-profile bills, including a Senate resolution blocking his declaration of a national emergency to build a wall on the Mexican border.

Other times the president used his veto pen was against previous war powers resolutions in 2020 related to the U.S. military's assistance to Saudi Arabia in Yemen's civil war and constraining his ability to take military action against Iran.

Democrats struggled to gain the two-thirds majority needed to override the president's recent vetoes, with some suspecting that Trump rejected the bills in order to punish political enemies and act on his political grudges.

Trump is holding rallies in Iowa and Kansas on Sunday, where Republican Senate candidates face close races heading into Tuesday.

More from the New York Post:

Should they return to power in either chamber, Democrats have promised to open up a flurry of investigations into Trump, his administration, and many allies. Trump still conveyed optimism that Republicans can hang on to both chambers of Congress as he continues his midterm blitz across the country.

"They want to get rid of your Second Amendment, have transgender for everyone," he said of the Democrats.

"Look, if we didn't win — I think we're going to do great — but if we didn't win, I'd veto everything. I'll be vetoing, vetoing."

The president also agreed with Elon Musk's recent warning that if Democrats sweep the elections on Tuesday, the country will be "maybe forever destroyed." Trump suggested that Democrats hope to add Puerto Rico and Washington, DC, as states — while expanding the size of the Supreme Court and eliminating the filibuster in the Senate to shut Republicans out of power.

The president had long pushed for Republicans in the Senate to eliminate the 60-vote filibuster, which allows the minority party to block key pieces of legislation. Part of his argument is premised on the idea that Democrats will likely abolish the filibuster when they return to power in the upper chamber.
