Several cats have perished in a suspicious fire that ripped through an animal shelter in Sydney's north-west.
Emergency services were called to the Hawkesbury Companion Animal Shelter in Mulgrave at about 5.30am on Monday following multiple triple-0 calls about a fire.
Dozens of firefighters extinguished the blaze but were unable to save two female cats and their kittens housed in the office area, which was completely gutted.
A passing motorist managed to rescue several dogs from the building, and a number of dogs housed in kennels attached to the shelter were also saved.
The exact number of animals lost has not yet been confirmed by authorities.
Detectives have launched an investigation into what sparked the fire, which is currently being treated as suspicious.
The animal shelter will remain closed on Tuesday.
'The shelter has extensive damage to the administration areas. Staff are currently making an assessment of the facility with animal welfare the priority,' a Hawkesbury Council statement read.
