A man has died after a punching bag machine landed on him when it was allegedly pushed over in the street – with police charging a Moroccan national.

The unnamed victim, in his 50s, was rushed to hospital following the incident outside a row of shops on Berkley Street in Toxteth just before 7pm on Thursday.

Police were called to the scene following reports a male bystander had suffered serious head injuries.

Iliasse Alhag, 22, of Percy Street, has been charged with affray, assault and wounding without intent.

He appeared at Liverpool Adult Remand Court today.

Police confirmed the victim had died of his injuries and the Crown Prosecution Service is reviewing the charges.

Detective Chief Inspector Alyson Keenan said: 'We are continuing our enquiries into this incident and urge anyone who was in the area of Berkley Street at the time, or who has information which could assist the investigation, to please get in touch.'
