Girl, 14, suffered awful facial injuries after deciding to take friend's e-bike for a spin

A Los Angeles teenager who narrowly survived an electric bicycle crash has spoken out about the dangers of riding e-bikes.

Raquel Waters, 14 at the time of the accident, has only just fully recovered from critical injuries to recount the harrowing moment that almost took her life.

'Only thing I remember is waking up in the hospital, having my jaw wired shut,' the teen said.

'I had staples in the side of my head, my hair was like in a big rat's nest.'

Andrea Rankin said her daughter's life was most likely saved by the helmet she was wearing on August 26, 2025.

She recalled receiving a phone call from Raquel's friend, saying she'd been in a harrowing crash on the bike.

'I picked up the phone and she said, "Rocky's been in an accident, and the ambulance is here to take her,"' Rankin told ABC 7.

'She went flying over the handlebars at a really high speed, and if she wasn't wearing a helmet, she would've probably not made it.'

Moment masked thieves break into elderly woman's home and order her to stay silent during burglary - before taking off with cash and jewellery

This is the moment masked thieves broke into an elderly woman's house and ransacked it as she watched on helplessly.

In footage captured on a Ring camera, an 83-year-old can be seen sleeping in her bed at her home in Hayes, west London, when four balaclava-clad men burst in.

The startled pensioner then gets out of bed as one of the men, carrying what appears to be a weapon, approaches the woman - ordering her to be quiet.

The robbers can then be seen rummaging through her belongings as she is sat shaking on her bed.

After just two minutes, they flee - leaving her personal possessions strewn across the room and the visibly distraught woman is left alone in her room.

Now, the Metropolitan Police have launched an investigation into the robbery with enquiries still ongoing.

The force said that several items of jewellery, as well as around £500 in cash was stolen from the property.

While one suspect was captured on CCTV carrying a weapon, no injuries were reported, it added.

Electricity supply failure sparks major disruption across north-west England's rail network - check if YOUR train is affected

Electricity supply failure sparks major disruption across north-west England's rail network - check if YOUR train is affected

An electricity supply failure is causing major disruption across much of England's train network this afternoon.

The outage is expected to last until the end of the day and is impacting rail companies in the North West and Greater Manchester area.

National Rail has warned services are delayed by two hours, while others are being cancelled or rescheduled due to a fault at a communications centre in Manchester.

The chaos has brought rail misery for many commuters, with passengers on a train in Manchester having to be evacuated from the train tracks.

One rail firm said it had to halt its services as trains are 'unable to run safely' due to a failure of the communication systems on the network.

Network Rail's Regional Operating Centre - which houses all the controls to safely operate the railway - has also been impacted, the BBC reported.

The cause of the power outage is an 'external power supply failure' in the Ardwick area of Manchester, according to Network Rail.

The lines affected are: Avanti West Coast, Cross Country, East Midlands Railway, London Northwestern Railway, Northern, TransPennine Express, Lumo and Transport for Wales.

Heartless scammers set up fake fundraiser after 'talented young footballer', 14, drowned in the River Thames

Heartless scammers have set up a fake fundraiser after a 'talented, young footballer' drowned in the Thames.

Banta Sillah, 14, died on Tuesday after jumping into the water at Millwall Outer Dock during the heatwave.

His football club, Frontline Community FC, paid an emotional tribute yesterday, describing him as a 'much-loved' and a 'true leader'.

Within hours of the tragic teen being named, a GoFundMe appeared with a £6,000 target asking for donations to help pay for his 'burial and a memorial'.

Kindhearted members of the public quickly parted with their hard-earned money, and by last night the page had reached more than £3,000.

But Banta's football club has now urged those who donated to report the page to GoFundMe and to ask for their money back.

People were still able to donate to the fundraiser this morning, but the account had been taken down by the time of publication.

GoFundMe told the Daily Mail that no money had been released to the campaign organiser and all donors have been refunded.

In another sickening twist, the fundraiser's supposed 'organiser' Banta Silluh bears a resemblance to the dead teen's name.

Law graduate collapsed during intensive bar exam... but proctors refused to pause the test, lawsuit alleges

A law graduate who collapsed during a bar exam has alleged that proctors refused to pause the test as she suffered a cardiac arrest, a lawsuit claims.

Mary Jane Jung, 36, suffered a medical emergency as she sat the New York state bar in July last year.

But as she began to 'gasp for air and cry out in distress,' exam officials failed to offer timely medical attention and scolded fellow test-takers for trying to help, a lawsuit filed on Wednesday claims.

The New Jersey-native said she lost consciousness and suffered a serious brain injury on July 30, 2025, at Hofstra University.

The grueling test takes around twelve hours over the course of two days.

Jung, one of around 600 examinees, began 'gasping for air, crying out, losing consciousness' and eventually turned blue as she collapsed in the exam hall shortly before a set lunch break, the complaint obtained by the Daily Mail stated.

'The unmistakable signs of cardiac arrest unfolded before hundreds of people present in the room,' the filing said.

'Yet, despite the obvious severity of the situation, Defendants' agents and employees failed to response with the urgency required by such a medical emergency.'

Mitch McConnell, 84, returns home after long hospitalization

Senator Mitch McConnell, 84, has returned home since he was hospitalized after a bad fall over 50 days ago.

McConnell wrote in a statement that he was 'discharged' from his rehabilitation center today to 'continue my recovery at home.'

He thanked his wife, Elaine, and the 'excellent' doctors, nurses and therapists who helped him at the hospital.

'On the advice of my doctors, I'll maintain an intensive regimen of physical therapy from home during the state work period,' he added.

A fall at his DC residence on June 14 left him briefly unconscious and paramedics rushed him to the hospital.

But he still has not been seen in public or released a video of any kind.

Last month, attention quickly turned to McConnell's wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, after she was noticeably absent during his first days in the hospital.

Chao was already in China when the senator suffered his medical emergency, having departed on a long-planned trip on June 12—two days before McConnell was hospitalized.

Heathrow flight disruption 'to continue for hours' with delays and diversions after grass fire closed runway

Heathrow flight disruption 'to continue for hours' with delays and diversions after grass fire closed runway

A grass fire at London's Heathrow Airport forced one of its runways to close this evening, with passengers warned disruption will continue for the rest of the day.

Runway 27L was closed for around an hour while the airport's fire service battled the blaze.

Witnesses said crew from four fire engines 'quickly brought the blaze under control'.

The closure happened at peak time for the airport, which normally has two operational runways. The reduced capacity meant takeoffs and landings were delayed, with several arriving flights diverted to other English airports.

Authorities said delays to schedule departures would stretch into the evening.

A spokesperson said: 'Due to a grass area fire 27L has had to be temporarily closed and therefore we will be 27R single runway operations [until further notice].'

The spokesman said operations on the affected runway resumed at around 6.45pm. 'Sorry for the inconvenience,' they added.

Flights from Newcastle, Aberdeen and Boston are believed to be among those that landed at other airports.

Midwest curmudgeon, 39, charged with placing homemade spike strip along popular bike path to take petty revenge on child cyclists

Midwest curmudgeon, 39, charged with placing homemade spike strip along popular bike path to take petty revenge on child cyclists

A Minnesota curmudgeon has been charged after he allegedly placed a homemade spike strip along a popular bike path to take petty revenge on child cyclists using his yard as a shortcut.

Kyle James Steffen, 39, is accused of installing the device outside his home, which sits along popular Goodview Park in the small city of Wyoming, earlier this year.

Officers were called to his $366,000 home on April 28 after a neighbor reported that Steffen was yelling at her children to stay out of his yard, according to a criminal complaint obtained by the Daily Mail.

When they arrived on scene, police saw a three-foot-long and five-inch-wide piece of plastic anchored into the grass next to his home, the filing said.

There were about 40 three-inch screws sticking straight up from the plastic strip, according to the complaint.

Officers noted bicycle tracks running under and around the strip and said it appeared that local children would bike through Steffen's yard as a shortcut into the park.

He has been charged with one gross misdemeanor count of setting a spring gun/pitfall/deadfall or snare. If convicted, Steffen could face

POLL: Which fictional character would make the best chief of staff in real life? Have your say in DC Insider

Current chief of staff, Susie Wiles, who the president nicknamed "ice maiden," is known for being a quiet figure while managing a fiercely loyal, aggressive core team. And she's made more headlines than most chiefs of staff even though she's very much media-averse.

While breaking historical ground as the first female chief of staff, the public has become fascinated by her and the intense opaque role.

Unelected and unconfirmed, the chief of staff is the president's closest adviser. When the president makes a life-and-death decision, often the only other person in the room holds this title.

It got us thinking, what fictional character would make the best chief of staff in real life?

Sound off in our poll below, and the results will be revealed in a future edition of the DC Insider newsletter.

JONATHAN BROCKLEBANK: This house holds so many memories... but why did they have to put a bidet in my brother's bedroom?

I am on the Zoopla property website, staring at a photograph of the house I used to call home.

Nothing much changes with Aberdeen's granite. To see it today is to see it as I first saw it as a toddler in 1970 when we moved there.

The crazy-paving front path is exactly as it was. The garden hedge shielding our bay-windowed lounge from the gaze of passers-by is still doing the same job.

Up there is my bedroom window, directly above the front door. Behind that glass, a childhood. My one.

There used to be a Sanyo radio cassette recorder in that room – a birthday present when I was eight or nine.

I'd sit cross-legged on the floor next to it, my fingers hovering over the play and record buttons, as the chart countdown show was broadcast on Radio 1.

This room was the scene of the most petulant strop of my childhood years. I ripped a set of drawers out of their chest and flung their contents over the floor. I pinged scrambled egg with a spoon onto the ceiling as I lay sulking on my bed.

It was on this bed in this

Michelin chef wins top hygiene rating after claiming he'd only been given one-star verdict because food inspectors didn't understand his sashimi

A two-Michelin-starred restaurant has been awarded a top hygiene rating after receiving a one-star verdict over flies, raw lobster and a dirty knife.

Ynyshir, located near Machynlleth in west Wales, was given the lowest possible rating following a hygiene inspection last November.

The report released by Ceredigion County Council found that the exclusive £468-a-head restaurant fell short in its 'layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities and pest control'.

It found that the correct checks had not been carried out to serve raw lobster and a rug hanging in the kitchen was not able to be cleaned properly.

Inspectors discovered that the safe management of ingredients including birch tree sap, aged pigeon and wild garlic was deemed to be inadequate.

They also observed that a knife used for preparing beef for burgers was 'dirty' and there was 'an accumulation of flies' on a paper sticky strip in the prep room near the walk-in chiller.

Officials consequently said a 'major improvement' was required for the management of food safety and the cleanliness of the facilities.

After the scathing report, the restaurant's head chef, Gareth Ward, 'immediately' made the necessary changes and was awarded the highest rating of five after a
