Deb Haaland has won the New Mexico gubernatorial race, defeating Republican Greggory Hull.
On Tuesday, Haaland was elected to New Mexico's gubernatorial seat, receiving 412,834 votes, while Hull garnered 308,315 votes, according to the Associated Press when 97% of the total votes were counted.
Haaland is the Democrat candidate who served as the 54th United States Secretary of the Interior from 2021 to 2025. Previously representing New Mexico's 1st Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2019 to 2021, she also served as chair of the Democrat Party of New Mexico.
Raised in a military family and an enrolled member of the Pueblo of Laguna, Haaland earned her bachelor's degree and law degree from the University of New Mexico. During her time in public office, Haaland focused on public land conservation, Indigenous sovereignty, environmental protection and renewable energy development.
She advanced to the general election as the Democrat nominee running alongside running mate Stephanie Garcia Richard, New Mexico's Commissioner of Public Lands. Conservatives oppose Haaland due to her policies restricting oil and gas leasing on public lands, support for far-left environmental regulations, and alignment with federal spending priorities.
Hull, the Republican candidate who served as the Mayor of Rio Rancho from 2014 to 2026, is a former small business owner who became the longest-serving mayor in Rio Rancho's history. He entered public office focusing on job creation, local economic growth and fiscal discipline.
His gubernatorial platform emphasizes "public safety enhancements, tax reductions, deregulation to spur business investment, and expanding educational opportunities" across the state. He earned the Republican nomination during the June primary elections and is running on a ticket with running mate David M. Gallegos, a New Mexico State Senator.
"Before entering public service, Hull demonstrated his entrepreneurial spirit by starting and operating two successful businesses over more than a decade. These ventures provided him with invaluable experience in job creation, and overcoming strenuous regulatory challenges that so many businesses face today. This has deeply influenced his approach to fostering a thriving local economy in Rio Rancho," his campaign website states.
