2 Maps Perfectly Encapsulate How Badly Republicans Fumbled Since 2024

A viral X post on Wednesday comparing maps from The New York Times demonstrates the extent to which voters shifted away from Republicans in the 2026 midterm elections.

The X post featured a NYT map depicting how voters shifted from 2020 to 2024, juxtaposed with a NYT map showing how voters shifted from 2024 to 2026. In the 2024 map, red arrows pointing to the right are drawn across the U.S., showing how voters chose Republicans more than they did Democrats in 2020. Meanwhile, the 2026 map shows blue arrows pointing left all across the country, demonstrating the complete reversal of the 2024 GOP rout.

Around 2,973 counties increased the margin by which they voted for President Donald Trump in 2024, according to The New York Times. Only 319 counties voted for Democrats more in 2024 than in 2020.

Democrats cruised to victory Tuesday, taking the majority in Congress after forfeiting it in 2024. So far in 2026, more than 2,000 counties have shifted towards the Democratic Party, according to the NYT.

The reversal of voting trends was accentuated by young men and Hispanic voters. After the majority voted for Trump in 2024, young men voted Democrat in 2026, according to the NYT. Meanwhile, Hispanic voters shifted towards Democrats by 28 points. (RELATED: Young Men Turned Their Backs On Trump In Midterms After Helping Him Win In 2024)

Before the midterms, 80% of voters considered the economy or cost of living to be "one of the most important issues," according to Associated Press polling. Voters did not trust Republicans on the economy.

The Iran War has forced an estimated $1100 burden onto each American household. According to polling, 53% of Republicans disapproved of Trump's handling of the economy. Over 70% of voters disapproved of Trump's handling of inflation. Only 27% of voters believed the economy was on the right track.

Outgoing Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis called the midterm election results a "close to an extinction-level event" for Republicans.
