The Seminoles have finally pulled the trigger.
Florida State made the decision Sunday to fire head coach Mike Norvell, bringing an end to his run following the program sliding from an ACC title in 2023 to a bottom-feeder in the conference
here in 2026.
Rick Stockstill, the director of scouting who was Middle Tennessee's head coach for 18 campaigns, will take over the team as the interim skipper, with the university announcing that its hunt for a full-time head coach will start immediately. In seven years as FSU's skipper, Norvell put up a 41-39 record. The highlight of his tenure was in 2023 when the Noles won the ACC championship with an undefeated 13-0 record. However, with the team's quarterback Jordan Travis sidelined with an injury, the selection committee for the College Football Playoff nixed Florida State out of the four-team postseason.
The Seminoles haven't recovered since then, going 10-23 with a 3-5 record this campaign.
Florida State University President Richard McCullough informed head football coach Mike Norvell this afternoon that FSU is making a change in the leadership of its football program, effective immediately.

I'm surprised it took Florida State this long to fire Norvell—he was never "the guy," he never gave off that aura.
2023 was a great season for Norvell. I remember defending Florida State when they blatantly got robbed by the College Football Playoff committee. But since then, it's been nothing but a systemic collapse. And you know why?
It's because of what I said from the moment he was hired by FSU: Mike Norvell is NOT a head coach.
