
Something enormous is taking shape in Texas.
And when Elon Musk says enormous, he does not mean another factory with a slightly bigger parking lot.
Tesla confirmed Thursday that a project called Terafab will be built in Grimes County — bringing Tesla, SpaceX and xAI together for what the companies describe as the largest chip-building effort in the world.

The official Terafab announcement says the facility will produce logic chips, memory and advanced packaging under one roof.
Tesla says its research fab, which broke ground on the north side of Giga Texas in April, will serve as the precursor. Terafab would then scale that work into a much larger supply operation for Tesla, SpaceX and xAI.
The companies say their future chip needs will outrun the supply the rest of the world can provide. That turns the project into a direct answer to a bottleneck that already constrains production plans across all three companies.
Robots and self-driving vehicles need advanced chips at scale. So do AI data centers and SpaceX's proposed orbital data centers.
Whichever company controls enough leading-edge computing capacity can move faster without waiting on overseas foundries, geopolitical stability or another customer's place in line. That independence could become a decisive competitive advantage.
That is the strategic promise behind the name Terafab: production on a scale designed around the companies' own long-term demand.
Tom's Hardware reviewed the newly disclosed plans and reported an estimated $16.8 billion for the first phase.
The completed Texas campus could span roughly 100 million square feet, with manufacturing space for logic chips and memory alongside facilities that package and test the finished products.
The report says Intel's advanced 14A manufacturing process is expected to play a role. Terafab is also projected to support at least 3,000 jobs, with 60 to 80 percent of the workforce coming from Grimes and Brazos counties.
Those details show why the project is bigger than a splashy rendering. It combines a huge capital commitment, a domestic workforce and multiple steps of the semiconductor supply chain at one site.
For perspective, 100 million square feet is not a normal factory.
It is an industrial ecosystem.

The public commitments already on paper are substantial.
KBTX obtained the signed Grimes County agreement, which sets legally enforceable benchmarks beneath the much larger public vision.
SpaceX committed to invest at least $5 billion by 2030 and create at least 1,800 full-time jobs by 2035. The company also owed the county a $10 million payment in early August under the deal.
Local officials approved a tax-abatement structure tied to performance rather than handing over an unconditional prize. Missing the investment or employment targets could reduce the benefit and trigger other remedies.
Water is another serious question for any semiconductor plant in Texas. The disclosed plan says Terafab would rely on reservoir water instead of pumping local groundwater, an important promise for nearby residents and farms.
There is another piece here that deserves attention.
A recent SpaceX securities filing formally describes collaboration with Tesla and xAI and identifies the goal of creating the world's largest chip facility. That language places the project inside SpaceX's official investor disclosures.
The filing places that work alongside SpaceX's expansion of Starlink and its longer-term computing ambitions. It also describes how the companies can share technology, personnel and infrastructure while pursuing distinct products.
Tesla brings vehicles, batteries and robots. xAI brings the models and power-hungry data centers that train and run them around the clock.
SpaceX brings launch systems, satellites and an appetite for orbital computing. Each line of business creates demand for specialized silicon at a scale few companies can match.
Terafab would put the silicon beneath all of them inside the same business orbit. The Texas location therefore carries economic and political weight far beyond one county tax agreement.
It also gives Musk's companies a shared industrial foundation that competitors would struggle to reproduce quickly.

States spent years treating manufacturing as yesterday's economy.
Now the most advanced technology companies on Earth are racing to build physical plants, secure power, train workers and harden domestic supply chains.
Texas did not land this project by accident.
It created an environment where a builder can still think in terms of decades, not the next permit hearing.
Terafab will take years to reach its full ambition, and a project of this scale will inevitably face engineering, financing and execution risks.
But the direction is already clear.
America's AI race is becoming an industrial race — and Musk just placed one of the biggest bets imaginable on Texas.
