The National Debt Keeps Growing
Cartoon published 08/17/2026
The U.S. national debt is projected to hit the $40 trillion milestone by the end of this month. The cost to service that debt will cost approximately $3.18 billion per day, according to Congressional Budget Office. Since big government loves to spend, the debt will only snowball with greater alacrity.
The last president to pay off the national debt was Andrew Jackson. He freed our country from the grip of central bankers. Woodrow Wilson let them resume their grip in 1913. The dollar has lost over 90 percent of its purchasing power since the installation of the Federal Reserve in 1913. It's neither federal nor a reserve—it's a means whereby central banks charge interest for the creation of our money. This is not necessary—we should be able to print debt-free money like Lincoln did and Kennedy wanted to do. (Both assassinated).
Soon the national debt will $50 trillion and then $100 trillion and ad infinitum. What happens then? Some say we should simply stop paying and default. If the U.S. government fails to make its payments on the national debt, it triggers a sovereign default. This unprecedented event would instantly shock the global financial system, freezing credit markets and crashing stock values—and it would probably trigger another Great Depression. The dollar will no longer be the world's reserve currency.

The only way out is to print even more debt money. Interest on the debt will be paid by means of inflation. It's a hidden tax that is added to all the other taxes citizens are expected to pay. Entitlement spending on Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid is projected to reach approximately $4.39 trillion in 2026—roughly 60 percent of the budget. Something has to give, and many are predicting cuts to Social Security and the other entitlements.

People don't want to worry about the national debt because "it's money owed to ourselves." Wrong. Citizens will pay interest to bondholders at the central banks and elsewhere by means of inflation. Citizens will find their money will buy less and less. Maybe it's time to buy real money—gold and silver.
