Ford has recalled more than four million vehicles due to a terrifying glitch that could have caused fatal collisions.
The US Department of Transportation issued the recall report last Friday, estimating that almost 4.4 million sports cars and pickups are affected.
The glitch is a software problem with the Integrated Trailer Module (ITRM), responsible for communication when a trailer is connected to the vehicle.
A loss of communication could result in taillights, turn signals, and brakes failing to work, which can cause crashes.
The problem can increase the risk of a collision and prevent a driver from controlling an attached trailer.
The loss of communication can also occur without a trailer connected to the vehicle after exiting a 'sleep mode' state.
Drivers should see a pop-up notification indicating a 'Trailer Brake Module Fault' if this happens.
Ford said in the recall report that it was unaware of any accidents, injuries or fires attributed to the glitch.

'These conditions result in a noncompliance with federal safety standards and can reduce a driver’s ability to control an attached trailer while making it less visible to other drivers,' Ford said in a statement to the Daily Mail.
The manufacturer is issuing a software update to remedy the problem. An over-the-air update will be sent to affected vehicles in May.
Drivers who want a quicker fix can bring their vehicles to a Ford or Lincoln dealer to have the update issued at no cost.
According to the safety recall report, seven vehicle types have been recalled, including the iconic Ford F-250 produced from April 5, 2021, to February 6, 2026. The DOT estimates that more than one million F-250s will be recalled.
An estimated 13,115 Ford E-Transit 2026 vehicles have also been impacted. In addition, around 75,000 Multipurpose Passenger Vehicles from 2021 to 2026 are affected.
Over 317,000 Ford Expeditions produced from 2021 to 2026 were included in the recall, like the model pictured above

More than 317,000 Ford Expeditions were included in the recall and around 400,000 2022-2026 Ford Mavericks.
Around 129,836 Ford Rangers produced in 2024 and 2026 have also been affected, as have a whopping two million Ford F-150s.
The update will be available starting March 17. All over-the-air updates should be issued by May, according to Ford.
Customers can double-check whether their vehicle has been impacted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website by entering their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), or in the FordPass app. The recall reference number is 26C10.
