Woman and man are arrested on suspicion of murder more than two decades after 25-year-old 'vanished from party' in Northern Ireland

A woman and a man have been arrested on suspicion of murder more than two decades after a 25-year-old 'vanished from a party' in Northern Ireland.

Lisa Dorrian disappeared on the night of February 27, 2005, from an event in Ballyhalbert Caravan Park in County Down and detectives believe she was murdered shortly afterwards.

Ms Dorrian's body has never been found despite several large-scale searches and desperate campaigning by her grieving family.

A 40-year-old woman has today been arrested on suspicion of her murder in Bangor, also in County Down, around 13 miles from the caravan park, almost exactly 21 years on from Ms Dorrian's disappearance.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) also suspect the woman of assisting offenders, withholding information and preventing a lawful and decent burial.

She remains in police custody.

The 42-year-old man was also arrested in connection with Ms Dorrian's murder under the same suspicions in Scotland earlier today, with the PSNI being supported by Police Scotland and the PSNI’s Cross-Border Transit Officers.

Detective Chief Inspector Kerrie Foreman said: 'The arrest comes just days before the 21st anniversary of Lisa's disappearance and murder.

'Lisa was last seen alive on the night of Sunday 27 February 2005 in Ballyhalbert in County Down, and we believe she was murdered that night or in the early hours of the following morning.

'We remain determined to provide justice for Lisa's family, and I would appeal to anyone with information about her disappearance and murder to contact detectives on 101.'

A 68-year-old man was previously arrested on suspicion of Ms Dorrian's murder in December last year. He too was also suspected of assisting offenders, withholding information and preventing a lawful and decent burial.

Speaking 20 years after she went missing, Lisa's sister Joanne Dorrian said that their mother had passed away 'never knowing what happened to her beautiful firstborn daughter'.

'Our family has never been the same since the day we got the news that Lisa went missing,' she added.

On the 20th anniversary of her disappearance, detectives made a renewed appeal for information and released CCTV images of her final few hours.

The video shows Ms Dorrian entering the Saltwater Brig pub in County Down on the afternoon of February 26.
