At 2 o’clock on Tuesday morning, Peter Mandelson was photographed returning to his London home after nine hours in police custody. 

Just two hours later, a punchy statement was released on his behalf by his blue-chip firm of lawyers Mishcon de Reya: ‘Peter Mandelson was arrested on Monday despite an agreement with the police that he would attend an interview next month on a voluntary basis.

Fewer criminals would see the inside of a jail cell under the Green Party's plans for power – which instead encourage crooks to 'make amends' to their victims.

The Germans seemed to delight in their own ­brutality, that summer morning in Athens. As the men were hustled down from the trucks and herded to the place of execution, a photo­grapher was on hand to record each step of the path to death.

Scotland Yard made an extraordinary apology to the Commons Speaker on Wednesday as a row broke out over Peter Mandelson's arrest.

Detectives told lawyers for Mandelson that Sir Lindsay Hoyle had tipped them off about claims the peer was planning to flee the country.
