Florida GOP primary for Byron Donalds seat has curious cast of candidates including Madison Cawthorn
Activist Catalina Lauf is mounting her third bid for Congress, after twice running unsuccessfully in Illinois.
The race to replace Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., in the House has drawn a wide array of candidates, including many out-of-state figures who relocated to take their shot.
Donalds is seeking the governorship, opening a path for the would-be congressmen. The district includes Cape Coral and Naples and is regarded as reliably Republican.
Activist Catalina Lauf is mounting her third bid for Congress, after twice running unsuccessfully in Illinois. President Donald Trump has endorsed her.
Among the other noteworthy candidates is former Rep. Madison Cawthorn, R-N.C., who lost his primary for reelection in 2022 after a series of scandals.
Former Rep. Chris Collins, R-N.Y., is also seeking the seat. He previously represented a now-defunct New York district and also served time in prison for insider trading before being pardoned by President Donald Trump.
Former Illinois state Sen. Jim Oberweis, R-Ill., previously ran against Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., for Senate there.
Actor John Strand, for his part, was present for the Jan. 6, 2021, incident at the U.S. Capitol.
Linda Sawyer, meanwhile, previously ran for Congress in Michigan.
Olwa Hawatmeh previously sought a House seat from New York.
Greg Bukowski, meanwhile, recently moved to the area from Texas and has embraced the nickname of "Tex" for the campaign.
Former Marine Mike Pedersen, while not a native of the area, has lived in Cape Coral for 26 years, according to NPR.
The only native of the district in the race is businessman Jim Schwartzel.
