Just another quiet Thursday in the Islamic Republic of Europe. Nothing to see here.
Yes, nearly two dozen commercial airliners suddenly received bomb threats on Thursday, forcing diversions, fighter jet escorts, emergency landings,
and airport shutdowns. Authorities scrambled bomb squads, passengers got the full "exit the aircraft in an orderly fashion" treatment, and then, well, nothing. It was just a hoax. All of them were hoaxes.
Thursday wasn't the beginning of this weird trend. Let's see what you've got, CBS News:
British authorities dismissed threats to about seven flights earlier this week as hoaxes, but the number of impacted journeys soared to at least 25 on Thursday, meaning significant disruption for thousands of passengers and raising concerns about a possible coordinated effort to impact travel on the continent.
So far, it remains unclear who, if anyone, is behind any such coordinated action, and no authorities have confirmed a link between any of the threats.
Thursday's wave of hoax bomb threats included:
An Aer Lingus flight from Dublin to Rome that was diverted to a French military base.
A Finnair flight escorted into Rome by a fighter jet.
Multiple Ryanair and Wizz Air flights scrambling to alternate airports.
A bunch of other jets landing under heightened security across Spain, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, and other countries.
Aviation security expert Paul Mason tells us that threats like this on passenger planes "don't happen that frequently," making this week's events "unusual."
He added that the credible, multi-airline nature of the threats "would suggest to me that it's been a very deliberate act by a typical actor rather than a load of coincidental, malicious calls."

Of course, Russia remains the favorite when it comes to suspects, because, well, it's Russia. Iran and its proxies also get a spot. Still, nobody's sure who this was.
We've also got this whole refrigerator-hack thing going on recently:
The planes were fine. So were the passengers. The bomb squads found nothing, and Europe's aviation security process worked exactly as it is designed to.
But also, mission accomplished to whoever did this. You've made people's lives miserable, and hopefully that's all you're in it for.
Fly safe, my friends.
