Absolutely tragic.
I'll give you the details on how it happened.
31-year-old father William "Stone" Romberg was out fishing Sunday afternoon at Panama City Beach with some friends when he hooked a seagull.
Most of us would've cut the line and been done with it, but Will decided the bird needed saving.
He swam out to untangle the bird. While sticking to his task, both the bird and the hook got caught in his hand. As he tried to make it back to shore, the current had other plans and pulled him farther out.
I'll leave the sad part for the NYP:
The Atlanta, Ga., native leaves behind his wife, Taylor, and their two young daughters, ages 1 and 3.
The family had just celebrated their youngest daughter's first birthday, two weeks before the drowning.
Stone's employer, La Dolce Vita, tells us of the fisherman, "His kindness left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him, and he will be deeply missed."
And I can totally see it. Anyone who drowns while going out of their way to save a seagull is a good man in my book. The internet, however, had lots of thoughts.
Regardless of the life lessons, the world is a little less kind with Stone gone.
And his little girls will need support in a world without a father.
You can donate to the family at GoFundMe, and I'll leave you with the fundraiser's text:
As many of you know, our communities at Pinnacle Port and Carillon have suffered the tragic loss of a very special young man, Stone Romberg. Our hearts are broken for everyone who knew and loved him.
