Black Viriginia Professor Claims He Was Victim Of Racist Attack, Police Say That’s Not What Happened

A Virginia Tech sociology professor alleged white teenagers targeted him in a racist attack, but police found the juveniles were simply clearing snow from their truck.

The Christiansburg Police Department (CPD) investigated the Feb. 10 incident and ruled out any hate crime, Fox News Digital reported. After speaking with multiple people, including an independent witness, investigators determined the juveniles had attended a gathering nearby. Two struggled to clear frozen debris from their truck bed because of the slope where the vehicle sat. The group then stopped where the road leveled out, and one pushed the remaining ice from the truck before they drove off.

“Our investigation has found no evidence of criminal intent or racial bias,” the town stated, according to Fox News Digital. Officials noted that “incorrect reports” had circulated suggesting the stop targeted a specific residence based on race. Dr. Onwubiko Agozino filed the complaint after the group stopped near his Christiansburg home while playing loud music. His Virginia Tech faculty page describes him as a “scholar-activist who values inclusive excellence and diversity with critical attention focused on people of African descent and other marginalized groups around the world,” Fox News Digital reported. The College Fix noted he recently sought a delegate seat in Virginia’s 42nd district.

The progressive group New River Valley (NRV) Indivisible declared a hate crime had occurred before police finished their review, The College Fix reported. According to the organization, eight white men arrived in four trucks outside Agozino’s residence. The group alleged they shouted racial epithets, including the N-word, and lobbed “ice bricks” onto his property. NRV Indivisible also claimed the men blasted Drake’s song “Energy” as “a calculated effort to terrorize and intimidate.”

Democratic congressional candidate Adam Murphy condemned the alleged incident before police concluded their investigation, The College Fix reported. Murphy declared “hate has no place in the 9th Congressional district.”

Agozino disputed the police findings in a statement to Fox News Digital. “Intent is only one element of crime because reckless or unreasonable behavior that is threatening to anyone is considered a breach of the law even if there is no intent to harm anyone,” he said.

He also claimed one of the trucks returned the following day and sat near his mailbox for about 20 minutes. “I hope that the statement by the police that there is no evidence of hate crime will not unwittingly embolden the suspects,” Agozino told Fox News Digital.
