Suspect Allegedly Shoots At Border Patrol, Ends Up Hospitalized

An individual allegedly opened fire at a U.S. Border Patrol agent near the Canadian border and prompted the officer to shoot back, sending the suspect to the hospital.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) alleged that a person shot at a Border Patrol agent around 1 a.m. on Feb. 22 in the small town of Pittsburgh, New Hampshire, which is home to about 800 people, The Associated Press (AP) reported. Pittsburgh is a rural New England town that lies adjacent to the Canadian province of Quebec.

The FBI did not disclose the name of the suspect but confirmed that the individual was being treated at a hospital, according to the AP. The agency did not disclose the identity of the agent involved in the alleged shooting but said they were not injured.

The gunfire took place close to a port of entry, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Commissioner Rodney Scott. (RELATED: Suspect Who Looked Ready To ‘Massacre Law Enforcement’ Shot Dead In Minneapolis, DHS Says)

The FBI Boston field office is taking the helm of the ongoing investigation into the incident alongside the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the District of New Hampshire, according to authorities.

“Initial reports indicate that the subject opened fire on the agent at which time the agent returned fire,” Scott told the public in a statement. “CBP is cooperating fully with the investigation.”

FBI, CBP and U.S. Attorney’s Office officials did not disclose additional details on the suspect or what cause the alleged shooting. The U.S. Attorney’s Office noted that they would disclose further information if the suspect is charged.

The nearby border crossing at Pittsburg, the sole New Hampshire town bordering Canada, is typically quiet, according to the AP.
