NEW: Bone-Chilling Clue Emerges From Guthrie Investigation

One of the Nest doorbell images released by the FBI in the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie was taken on a different day than the others, a source with knowledge of the probe confirmed to Fox News Digital on Monday.

The development suggests the masked suspect may have scouted the Tucson home before the 84-year-old was abducted Feb. 1.

The source would not say when the earlier image was captured, citing the ongoing investigation.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos told Fox News the information did not come from him.

The FBI previously released two images showing a masked figure on Guthrie’s porch. A source familiar with the case told Fox News Digital the photos were taken on different days.

Investigators have cast a wide net in seeking tips, at various times asking neighbors to review security footage from the entire month of January, the night of Jan. 11 and the hours between Jan. 31 and Feb. 1.

ABC News first reported that authorities were looking at the possibility of a scouting visit, citing unnamed sources.

Retired FBI Supervisory Special Agent Jason Pack said the idea of casing the home points to planning, not a spur-of-the-moment act.

“That’s sophistication. That’s the hallmark of someone who thought about this before they acted. And it matters significantly from a legal standpoint, because premeditation and planning elevate the severity of what investigators are looking at,” Pack said. “The suspect in this case may have thought they were being careful. But appearing twice on camera while trying to avoid identification isn’t careful. That’s exposure. And right now, investigators are working very hard to close that gap.”

The possibility of an earlier visit also raises questions about the data recovered from the camera system. Guthrie’s doorbell camera disconnected at 1:47 a.m. the night she vanished, according to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department. At 2:12 a.m., another camera detected a person but did not record video.

After initial reports about differing dates surfaced, the sheriff’s department pushed back.

“We are aware that doorbell images released earlier in the investigation depict a suspect in different stages of attire, including with and without a backpack,” the PCSD said in a statement. “There is no date or time stamp associated with these images. Therefore, any suggestion that the photographs were taken on different days is purely speculative.”

The FBI did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In a phone interview with NBC News, Nanos echoed that stance.

“It is all speculative for someone to suggest that that photo is from a different day. That’s all it is, is speculation. We understand the thinking behind it, but right now we have no evidence to suggest that that occurred that day or days before.”

“We cannot tell you it’s a different day. We don’t know that. It’s under the, it’s still under investigation,” he added.

Some experts have questioned whether the masked individual in the images is even the same person, pointing to differences in clothing and the absence in one image of a backpack and holstered firearm.
