Another Keir Starmer ally quits as Rachel Reeves' top aide departs her Treasury team

Another Keir Starmer ally quits as Rachel Reeves' top aide departs her Treasury team

Another ally of Sir Keir Starmer is quitting the Government as a senior Treasury aide announced his departure today.

Matt Pound will leave his role as Rachel Reeves' political secretary after the Chancellor gives her Spring Statement next week.

Treasury sources said to he is stepping down as one of Ms Reeves' top advisers in order to pursue new challenges.

Mr Pound has worked for Labour for more than a decade and was part of Sir Keir's successful leadership campaign in 2020.

He went on to become Sir Keir's head of political organising when Labour were in opposition, before being political director for elections in the party's head office.

Mr Pound worked closely with Morgan McSweeney - who resigned as Sir Keir's chief of staff earlier this month - during that time.

He has been a senior adviser to Ms Reeves' ever since Labour's general election victory in July 2024.

It is understood that Ms Reeves' and Mr Pound mutually agreed that post-Spring Statement is the right time for him to step down as he seeks new opportunities.

As well as Mr Pound and Mr McSweeney's departures from the top of Government, Sir Keir lost his communications director Tim Allan this month.

The embattled Prime Minister also recently ousted his Cabinet Secretary Sir Chris Wormald just 19 months after handpicking him as the UK's top civil servant.

It comes as Sir Keir attempts another 'reset' of his faltering premiership in the wake of the Peter Mandelson scandal, which prompted the exit of Mr McSweeney from No10.

The PM has come under pressure from Labour MPs to dismantle a so-called 'boys club' in Downing Street.

Mr Pound said: 'Working alongside Rachel to rebuild our economy after 14 years of Conservative chaos is something I will be forever grateful for and will never forget.

'We have come a long way to turn the Labour Party around from electoral oblivion in 2019 to a historic general election victory just five years later, and it is a privilege to have been a part of that.

'To Rachel and my excellent colleagues over the years, I will continue to support you as you strive to deliver the change the country needs.'

Ms Reeves said: 'Matt's role in transforming the Labour Party and securing a historic general election win was nothing short of pivotal.

'On entering Government to a dire inheritance and a £22billion Conservative black hole, he has played a key part in helping fix the foundations of the economy and deliver the change we were elected to do.

'I am incredibly grateful for his hard work, loyalty and expertise, and wish him all the very best in what comes next.'
