Revealed: The gory secret behind Mel Gibson's Braveheart sword as iconic prop goes under the hammer

It was literally made to drip blood in battle scenes...

The claymore wielded by Mel Gibson in Braveheart features a hidden slit in its steel blade which would be filled with fake blood for action sequences.

The secret special effect has been revealed now that the two-handed sword – along with the costume worn by Gibson in the 1995 William Wallace epic – is expected to fetch up to £180,000 at an auction of movie memorabilia.

The costume, including armour and a red, black and green tartan woollen shirt, is estimated to fetch between £50,000-£100,000 while the sword's guide price is £40,000 to £80,000.

A description of the sword reads: 'As Wallace slashed the sword across his foes in battle, blood would spurt from the sword, looking like he had cut his opponents.

'The slit is on just one side of the blade to ensure that blood would flow only from that side.

'The metal and leather components show evidence of wear consistent with on-set use, handling, and age.'

Auctioneer Propstore's Stephen Lane said: 'We can't wait to find new homes for these relics with collectors who will treasure their place in film history.'

The Winter Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auction in London will run from December 4-6. Braveheart won five Oscars including Best Picture.
