Justice Samuel Alito has reiterated his decision to stay through the end of his current Supreme Court term, despite midterm elections drastically shifting power in Washington in
favor of the Democrat party.
Following significant GOP losses in the midterms, some Republicans urged Justice Alito to retire while the party still controls the Senate, allowing President Donald Trump to appoint a replacement before Democrats take over the chamber.
However, the 76-year-old justice said he plans to remain on the court through his current term, according to several media reports on Thursday.
In an interview with CBS News in October, Alito stated he expects to reconsider retirement each year and told Bloomberg in the same month that he intends to "stick around through this term."
Alito is the Supreme Court's second-oldest justice next to Clarence Thomas, who is 78-years-old.
When the new congressional term begins in January, Democrats will be in firm control of the Senate. This could make it extremely difficult for President Trump to fill any potential vacancy with a Republican after this year.
