Two people were killed and two others were injured in a shooting at a California beach early Monday morning.
Police responded to Moss Landing State Beach just before 2am Monday for reports of shots fired and found two people dead at the scene, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds, Commander Andrew Rosas, of the Monterey County Sheriff's Office, said at a news conference.
A third individual was transported from the scene to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries, and a fourth victim arrived at a local hospital suffering from gunshot wounds. That victim's condition remains unclear.
The victims' identities have not yet been released, and Rosas said at the news conference: 'We have no information on whether these individuals knew each other. We have no details whatsoever.'
'This is an active scene and they are in the process of trying to determine exactly what happened,' Rosas said, noting it will be a 'lengthy investigation.'
But Chief Park Ranger Mike Dippel noted that the beach closes at sunset so 'these people were here after hours.'
The state park will now remain closed amid the investigation, but the sheriff's office reassured the public that there is no active threat to the community.
Following the shooting, State Senator John Laird, who represents Monterey County, issued a statement offering his support.

'Over the weekend, there were numerous reports of shooting deaths across the country,' he wrote on social media.
'This unspeakable horror has also hit home on the Central Coast, with reports of multiple fatalities just after midnight today in Moss Landing.'
Laird continued: 'The pain and suffering of all those impacted is impossible to measure and my heart goes out to everyone.
'Thank you to the Monterey County Sheriff and team for its management of this devastating situation. If Team Laird can be of assistance, please contact my Monterey County office.'
Moss Landing is a state beach park known for its panoramic views of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
It is a popular spot for picnics because the dunes protect it from afternoon winds, but it is a hazardous area for water recreation due to strong rip currents, according to California State Parks.
The state parks website says Moss Landing State Beach is open from 8am to sunset, and there is no entrance fee.
The Daily Mail contacted the sheriff's office and the park's department for additional information.
