A ballot measure that would have amended California's constitution to require voters to provide government-issued identification to cast a vote was soundly defeated in Tuesday's midterm election.
With an estimated 60% of votes counted Wednesday, the measure had been defeated by 58.6% of the state's voters, according to the Associated Press.
In addition to ID requirements, Proposition 39 would have required voters to provide the last four digits of a government-issued identification number to cast a mail-in ballot.
Democratic leaders had rallied against the measure, arguing it would amount to voter suppression, whereas the GOP characterized it as a common-sense requirement that's been adopted in more than two dozen states, CalMatters reported.
