President Donald Trump announced that the parameters for a deal between the United States and Iran had been agreed upon, leading him to cancel attack plans on the Islamic Republic.
Despite this week’s uptick in regional hostilities, Trump said in a Saturday Truth Social post that he had canceled a planned attack on Iran as the two countries worked toward an agreement.
“The U.S.A. is locked and loaded and ready to go against the Islamic Republic of Iran, at levels of Military Terror, Strength, and Power not seen since World War II,” the U.S. commander-in-chief said. “Despite this, we have just been asked by Iran, and other Middle Eastern Countries, to hold off any attack in that the perimeters of a deal has been agreed to.”
“Based on this request, I have agreed, for the future benefit of the WORLD and, likewise, the survival of a successful and prosperous Iran, to cancel the attack, subject to being able to rapidly make a DEAL,” he continued, noting that Israel supported the move.
The conflict reignited in the region with the collapse of the memorandum of understanding (MOU) earlier in July, though some progress toward an agreement appeared to have been made last week as U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) paused strikes on Iran.
However, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) reportedly attempted a surprise attack on U.S. forces based in Jordan on Tuesday, with CENTCOM asserting that all missiles were intercepted. In response, the U.S. launched a “heavy” attack wave, targeting IRGC military sites and maritime capabilities in Iran.
In alignment with the long-stated goals of his administration, Trump emphasized the two key conditions that would necessarily be a part of the agreement currently being negotiated.
“This would include the Immediate, Complete, and Total OPENING OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT, and an end to Iran’s nuclear threat,” the president asserted.
According to the Associated Press, an anonymous regional official involved in the mediation efforts said the proposal calls for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the cessation of attacks in the region, including by Iranian-backed militias in Iraq against countries in the region. In exchange, the U.S. would end its naval blockade of Iranian ports.
Though Trump announced the progress made in reaching a deal, he has previously voiced frustration over Iran’s apparent inconsistency in negotiations.
“They’ve been very dishonest. They’ve been very dishonorable to deal with,” Trump said about Iran during a Cabinet meeting at Camp David on Friday.
