The Texas Stock Exchange (TXSE), based in Dallas, officially went live as “Y’all Street” makes its bid to compete with the duopoly of Nasdaq and Wall Street giant, the New York Stock Exchange.

Describing itself as the only national securities exchange built, headquartered and incorporated in Texas, TXSE conducted its first bell ringing on Friday as the Lone Star State positions itself as one of the top pro-business environments in the country.

While New York has long been the financial epicenter of the U.S., TXSE recognized the growing economic influence not only in Texas but across the Southeast, which the exchange says leads “the nation in economic expansion and population growth.”

According to the TXSE, the Southeastern region of the United States—dubbed the “Boom Belt” and comprising Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas—generates an annual gross domestic product (GDP) of $8.9 trillion, making it the world’s third-largest economy behind only the United States as a whole and China. Texas alone ranks as the nation’s second-largest state economy behind California and the world’s eighth-largest economy, surpassing Italy and Russia.

“On this historic day, Texas asserts its place as the financial capital of America. The Texas Stock Exchange now operates at full capacity and projects the economic strength of Texas across the nation and the world,” said Governor Greg Abbott (R-Texas) in a Friday statement.

“This state-of-the-art platform affirms Texas’ leadership in free enterprise and capital markets. We will make Texas stronger and more prosperous than ever before,” he added.

The trading operations for TXSE began on July 6th as part of a phased rollout culminating in Friday’s fully launched operations, the governor’s office explained.

According to The Dallas Morning News, citing NasdaqTrader.com, more than $700 million worth of shares were traded on TXSE on Friday.
