Former West Virginia Gov. Jay Rockefeller Dies At Age 89

John D. "Jay" Rockefeller IV, a former Democratic U.S. senator and governor of West Virginia and a member of one of the nation's most famous and wealthiest families, died Friday at his Washington, D.C., home at 89.

His family did not provide a cause of death when announcing his passing, The Washington Post reported. Jay was the great-grandson of billionaire John D. Rockefeller Sr., who became one of the richest people in the early 20th century after monopolizing the oil industry through his Standard Oil Trust. This rise to power opened the door for many later Rockefellers to achieve positions of leadership, including several governors, the head of a bank, and even a vice president, Jay's uncle Nelson A. Rockefeller.

Jay would follow their path, beginning his first of two terms as governor of West Virginia in 1977. There, the liberal Democrat would lead his adopted coal-mining state, which had been facing problems of an aging population, high poverty, and struggling education.

"From his early work in some of our state's most disadvantaged communities to his efforts to strengthen healthcare, protect coal miners and their families, and support our veterans, Senator Rockefeller demonstrated a deep commitment to the people of West Virginia," Morrisey said. "His decades of service deserve our respect and gratitude, and his legacy will remain an important part of West Virginia's history."

After his term as governor, he continued to serve the state, beginning his first of five six-year terms as the state's senator in 1985. He did not seek reelection after the end of his final term in 2015.

In the Senate, Jay expanded healthcare and criticized President George W. Bush's handling of the Iraq War, Reuters reported.

"He was always a true gentleman who treated me with respect, kindness, and encouragement. Over the years, we developed a wonderful friendship that transcended politics, and I will always be grateful for that," Capito said. "Above all, Jay loved his family."
