Carjacking Goes Poorly for Carjacker When Brave Victim Fights Back After Being Shot

A would-be carjacker had a rude surprise Monday when the intended victim didn't back down despite being shot.

Philadelphia police say the would-be carjacker brandished a handgun and fired at the driver of a blue Volvo, wounding him before the driver drew a handgun of his own and returned fire, NBC 10, a Philadelphia-area TV station, reported. The suspect fled after the exchange of gunfire and is still being sought by police.

The driver is in stable condition at an area hospital, while it is unknown whether the would-be carjacker was struck by any rounds. Philadelphia was required to issue permits on a "shall issue" basis after 1995's Act 17, which ended its unique status allowing it to retain discretion following 1989 legislation in response to a court ruling.

Massachusetts Mayor Charged in Alleged $1.5 Million Pandemic-Era Loan Fraud And Money Laundering Scheme

The Democratic mayor of Lawrence, Mass. has been arrested and faces charges for allegedly fraudulently obtaining more than $1.5 million in pandemic-era small-business loans and misusing the money, the Department of Justice said Friday.

Brian DePeña, 61, was charged with one count of wire fraud and one count of money laundering and is set to make an initial appearance in a Boston federal court on Friday, the DOJ said in a news release. DePeña used the funds from the pandemic relief loans to fund his campaign account, pay personal taxes, and pay off more than $880,000 in high-interest mortgages, the department alleges.

Hollywood Actress Delivers Most Unhinged Lindsay Clancy Conspiracy Theory We've Heard Yet: 'Women Don't Strangle'

The Lindsay Clancy case is both sad and, factually anyhow, straightforward.

On Jan. 24, 2023, Clancy, a woman who had sought treatment for mental health issues related to postpartum depression, strangled her three young children in her home in Duxbury, Massachusetts, with exercise bands. She then attempted to strangle herself but survived, leaving herself with spinal cord injuries.

Her husband, whom Clancy had asked to leave the house to run errands while she committed the murders, discovered the children at home when he came back and called 911. Clancy is pursuing an insanity defense; according to Connecticut Insider, Clancy said she committed the murders because she was commanded by a male voice.

Her lawyers insist she was improperly medicated by the mental health professionals treating her and that her care regimen was disjointed, the Associated Press noted as the trial wrapped up its 14th day on Monday.

County Commissioners of Boulder County case, which will decide whether local governments can use state tort law to pursue claims with implications extending far beyond their borders. Any third-party effort in modern American politics is a suicide pact in which only one side agrees to the mutual demise, if it’s successful.

With the exception of one governorship gleaned from Ross Perot’s Reform Party — Jesse “The Body/The Brain” Ventura’s single term as Minnesota’s chief executive — no third party has found any sustained success since the Populist Party of the late 19th century.

Most, if not all, of the short-lived third-party runs were designed not to win but to throw presidential elections into chaos, usually for very specific grievances and not holistic platforms. George Wallace’s American Independent Party, which sought to deny the Democrats the presidency in 1968 under the pretense that it no longer hated blacks enough, is the beau ideal of what a modern third-party movement looks like.

It’s therefore worth paying close attention when Tucker Carlson, Marjorie Taylor Greene, and other MAGA defectors who seem to have a curious preoccupation

DOJ Set for 'Historic' Deployment of Poll Watchers for Midterms

The midterm elections will be conducted under the intense scrutiny of the Justice Department, according to Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon.

In a new interview, she said the Justice Department will have about 1,000 monitors stationed across the country to ensure the election is conducted properly, according to Bloomberg.

Dhillon, who oversees the DOJ's civil rights division, said the scale is new but the concept is not without precedent.

"We just did it in the primary. We will do it to the tune of approximately 1,000 election monitors in the November election. This is something that DOJ does," she said.

A major Democratic donor will support Republican Bruce Blakeman in his effort to oust Democratic New York Gov. Kathy Hochul.

Bonnie Englebardt Lautenberg, the widow of former Democratic Sen. Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey, has crossed party lines, according to the New York Post.

"It's the talk of the Hamptons," said one Democrat who expressed surprise. "It's a good get for Bruce."

ICE Nabs Twice-Deported, Previously Convicted Drug Trafficker with 126 Kilos of Meth in Georgia

An illegal immigrant from Mexico who had been deported twice was arrested recently after a major methamphetamine bust in Georgia.

Pedro Guadarrama-Loza was arrested on Aug. 13 by Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations.

Agents seized 126 kilograms of methamphetamine at the time, according to a Department of Homeland Security news release.

Guadarrama-Loza has a past conviction for felony-level drug trafficking and a prior arrest in Georgia for driving without a valid driver's license.
