President Trump’s DOJ Tells Democrats It Is ‘Not Afraid’ As Subpoena Threats Begin

President Trump's Justice Department just answered Democrats who are promising an avalanche of subpoenas and investigations next year.

Its message was blunt: We are not afraid.

Democrats are now making the threat unmistakable.

Rep. Robert Garcia, the California Democrat in line to lead the powerful House Oversight Committee, repeated that warning Friday while accusing the Trump family of corruption.

That was no throwaway taunt.

The Associated Press reported that Democrats are preparing a sprawling oversight operation with larger committee staffs and the power to demand records, call witnesses, and issue subpoenas. Garcia has named President Trump's family businesses, immigration enforcement, the Epstein files, and the former DOGE operation among his targets, making clear that this will reach far beyond one committee or one policy dispute.

The clash is already centered on the issue voters said mattered most: the cost of living.

Rep. Suhas Subramanyam offered the Democrats' defense Friday: they can pursue accountability and affordability at the same time.

That is the political gamble. The more attention Democrats devote to subpoenas, the harder it becomes to persuade families that affordability remains their first priority.

Other Democrats have named Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller, border czar Tom Homan, Border Patrol official Gregory Bovino, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and private technology executives as possible targets.

They are not hiding the scale of what they want to do.

Fox News Digital reported that Sen. Ed Markey predicted so many subpoenas that new forests would have to be planted to supply the paper. Rep. Delia Ramirez publicly told a list of Trump officials to clear their schedules, while Rep. Yassamin Ansari said Hegseth could expect subpoenas and renewed impeachment pressure once Democrats take possession of the committee gavels.

The Justice Department is not backing down.

A DOJ spokesperson told Fox that the department followed the law while protecting Americans and said it was "not afraid of threats from Democrats." The spokesperson also accused Democrats of returning to political weaponization instead of addressing the cost pressures voters face.

The White House delivered the same basic answer.

Spokeswoman Lauren Bis said President Trump remains willing to work with anyone who wants to deliver victories for working Americans. But she warned that Democrats choosing sham investigations and radical policies would be choosing to work against those Americans.

Fox's Friday report put that contrast in plain view.

Axios noted that Democrats now face a difficult balancing act: They campaigned on affordability, but many of their most visible post-election statements have focused on investigations and subpoenas. Democratic leaders argue that corruption and the cost of living are connected, while the Trump administration says the promised probes are a partisan attempt to paralyze the government.

Congress does possess serious oversight powers, and legitimate oversight has a place in our system.

What Americans are about to learn is whether Democrats intend to use those powers to expose actual wrongdoing—or to manufacture a two-year spectacle aimed at President Trump, his family, his Cabinet, and anyone who helped carry out the agenda voters approved in 2024.

The subpoenas have not even gone out yet, and the battle lines are already unmistakable.

Democrats are telling the administration to lawyer up.

The Trump DOJ is telling them it will not be intimidated.
