Disney has a new cartoon that features a character named "Captain Durag" (the name of the head wrap often worn by black gangstas).
For real!
Captain Durag is a character on a show called "Hey AJ!" and is a fanciful figment of the title character's imagination.
People thought it was a little racist and on the nose.
The backlash was such that the creator of the character, which is voiced by former NFL star Martellus Bennett, had to come out and publicly defend against accusations of racism.
Black Twitter is a wild place, y'all.
It's also very weird that the author chose this sort of stereotype to base a superhero off of.
But it seems like some are cool with it now that they know the call is coming from inside the house?
(Imagine a white guy getting away with saying "us or them" about a white stereotype!)
Here's more from Zerohedge:
Corbett told The New York Post that 'as a scholar,' she'd 'never speak on anything I've never experienced,' urging viewers to actually watch the show.
'Hey AJ!' creator Martellus Bennett echoed her on Instagram: 'If that offends you, maybe the problem isn't the durag. Maybe the problem is that you've never seen black imagination treated as sacred, heroic and worthy of a cape.'
Bennett described the character as a reflection of black life, pushing back against detractors who saw it as reducing black identity to caricature.
This is the most "I'm a scholar" response of all time.
