Mom says autistic son was served dog food at Wisconsin high school

Ladies and gentlemen, Madison Public Schools!

From Channel 3000:

A Madison mother is demanding accountability after she says staff at Madison East High School fed her autistic son dog food instead of a school lunch.

Debra Hawkes says her 15-year-old son Jaden, a freshman who has autism and is non-verbal, was given a can of wet Nutrish dog food by a staff member a few weeks ago.

It sounds unbelievable. But it appears to be true — so true, in fact, that there is apparently even a photograph of the dog food in question:

Details of the incident are sort of unclear; school staff "called Debra to confirm that a staff member had given Jaden dog food," but she says she "does not know how the dog food ended up at the school or why it was given to her son."

Ms. Hawkes, meanwhile, was apparently outraged over not only the dog food but the way in which it was presented to her son:

And then when you give it to him, you give an autistic child a can — a can?! That he could cut himself [with]. With a plastic fork. You might as well gave him a metal fork if you gone give him a metal can. How is that a accident?

The staff member who apparently authorized this disgusting decision has been fired, according to the school district, which also confirmed that it is continuing an investigation into the matter.

Ms. Hawkes, meanwhile, expressed a feeling many parents in similar situations have felt:

My heart hurt, my heart is broke. I feel like I don't got no control over what happens to my own kid.

Here's the news segment:

Public schools, y'all.
