President Donald Trump has promoted longtime MAGA loyalist Stephen Miller to White House chief of staff, sending Democrats and liberal media figures into a frenzy just days after Republicans suffered major midterm election losses.
The president announced the shakeup Friday, confirming that Miller, one of his most trusted advisers and a leading architect of his immigration agenda, will replace Susie Wiles beginning Monday, Nov. 9.
But it was the reaction from Democratic Rep. Don Beyer of Virginia that quickly stole the spotlight.
During an appearance on BBC Newsnight, Beyer compared Miller to one of the most notorious villains in movie history.
"Stephen Miller is probably the single darkest force – the Darth Vader of this country," Beyer said.
The extraordinary comparison came as Democrats reacted to Trump's decision to elevate Miller rather than distance himself from the administration's aggressive immigration enforcement policies following Tuesday's election results.
Beyer was not finished.
In the same clip shared by BBC Newsnight, the Virginia Democrat offered an equally dramatic reaction to the announcement.
"I'm gonna go cry for the next half hour," Beyer said.

The remarks highlighted the intensity of Democratic opposition to Miller, whose unapologetic approach to border security and immigration enforcement has made him one of the administration's most recognizable figures.
Trump, however, made clear that he remains confident in his longtime adviser.
In a Friday announcement on Truth Social, the president confirmed Miller's promotion and praised outgoing chief of staff Wiles, who will transition to his political operation.
"I am pleased to announce that Mr. Stephen Miller, the current Deputy Chief of Staff of the Trump Administration, and one of my most trusted advisors, will become the Chief of Staff starting Monday, November 9, 2026. Susie Wiles, who has done an outstanding job, will be moving over to the Trump Political Operation. I want to thank her for her service as Chief of Staff — She has done a great job!" Trump wrote.
The appointment represents a significant promotion for Miller, who has worked closely with Trump since his first presidential campaign.
During Trump's first administration, Miller helped develop immigration policies emphasizing stronger border enforcement, restrictions on illegal immigration and expanded deportation efforts.
He returned to the White House in January 2025 as deputy chief of staff for policy, continuing to play a central role in shaping the president's domestic agenda.

Now, Miller will oversee White House operations as Trump prepares for two years of divided government.
The decision immediately drew criticism from former Obama adviser David Axelrod, who blamed Miller for contributing to Republican losses in the midterms.
"Few did more to contribute to the debacle the @gop just endured than Stephen Miller. The backlash to his brutal ICE raids and nativist rants can be seen in returns all over the country. And for that, he's.: PROMOTED?!?!" Axelrod wrote on X.

Axelrod's criticism reflected a broader argument among Democrats that the administration's immigration enforcement policies contributed to the Republican Party's election setbacks.
However, the election results alone do not establish that Miller's policies caused the losses. Republicans also faced voter concerns about the economy, inflation and the ongoing conflict with Iran.

Former CNN correspondent Jim Acosta joined the backlash, criticizing Trump's decision to promote Miller following the election.
"Totally predictable. He thinks the country wants more Stephen Miller."
Acosta shared a screenshot of the president's announcement alongside his remarks.

The reactions underscored the deep political divisions surrounding Miller, who has consistently defended the administration's efforts to strengthen immigration enforcement and restrict illegal border crossings.
For Trump, the promotion places a trusted adviser in a position responsible for coordinating White House staff, managing access to the president and overseeing the administration's daily operations.

The move also comes as Republicans prepare to surrender control of both chambers of Congress following Tuesday's elections.
Democrats will gain greater authority over congressional committees and legislative priorities, potentially creating additional obstacles for Trump's agenda.
Nevertheless, the president retains his executive authority and constitutional veto power, making coordination between the White House and congressional Republicans particularly important.
Susie Wiles, who helped lead Trump's successful 2024 presidential campaign, will now move into his political operation as Republicans reassess their strategy following the midterms.
Her departure from the chief of staff position marks a significant leadership change, although Trump publicly praised her work and confirmed that she would remain involved in his political efforts.
Miller's elevation also signals that the president has no immediate intention of abandoning the immigration priorities that have defined much of his political career.
While Democrats are celebrating their congressional victories, Donald Trump is placing one of his most prominent immigration advisers in charge of White House operations.
And judging by Beyer's Darth Vader comparison and the furious reactions from Axelrod and Acosta, the appointment has already become a major flashpoint between the administration and its political opponents.
Miller is scheduled to assume his new position Monday, Nov. 9, succeeding Wiles as White House chief of staff.
