For two years, hundreds of hand-knitted stuffies have been popping up around the village of Hartford, Cheshire, in the U.K. And now, the secret identity of the mystery knitter has finally been revealed.
The Hartford Civic Society wanted to honor the Good Samaritan for her persistent random acts of kindness, which had become a fun part of the community, with a Hartford Civic Award.
The knitter, 90-year-old June Rose Hood, had enlisted the help of her grandson, Matt Tarry, to place the stuffed animals around town. Each knitted toy included a handwritten note signed "Granny H."
Hood told the BBC,
I just love doing it. I can imagine the little children's faces lighting up when they find them. I think I'd be a really grumpy person without it. I just sit and knit and the time flies by.
When the Hartford Civic Society identified the knitter as June Rose Hood and learned that she was about to celebrate her 90th birthday, they decided they needed to do something in addition to the civic award, and planned a surprise party for the grandmother.
At the party, she was presented with the award, flowers, and a birthday cake. With the help of a community Facebook page, they also invited children from the community to join them at the party, bringing their knitted animals and dolls to thank 'Granny H'.
Her daughter Paula Tarry said of the celebration,
It has been magical. I can't thank everyone enough for recognising what my mum does. She's got a heart of gold.
She went on to say,
She went through a very tough time last year and felt very lonely. She was a little bit lost. But this has changed her life. The moment she wakes up she cannot wait to get those knitting needles out quick enough.
Her grandson Matt, not mentioning his own role in placing the animals around town, referred to his grandmother as a 'local celebrity' for her random acts of kindness that have brightened up the whole village.
