Na sexta-feira, mesmo no momento em que o presidente dos EUA, Donald Trump, anunciava o fim da mais recente ronda do conflito com o Irão, o Pentágono ampliou discretamente o teatro de operações ao Mar Cáspio, numa manobra geopolítica de enorme repercussão. O incidente quase não teve destaque na cobertura noticiosa ocidental.

Mas a CGTN, talvez percebendo que os EUA poderiam estar a alargar sub-repticiamente a sua guerra à região do Cáspio, noticiou a 25 de julho:   "Mísseis norte-americanos atingiram um quartel-general da Marinha da Guarda Revolucionária na área de Ziba Kenar, na província de Gilan, no Mar Cáspio, de acordo com um responsável de segurança em Gilan citado pela comunicação social iraniana. As autoridades provinciais afirmaram que projéteis norte-americanos também haviam atingido a cidade portuária de Bandar Anzali, segundo a Iranian Labor News Agency".

A província de Gilan, que possui uma costa no Mar Cáspio, faz fronteira com o Azerbaijão a oeste, país com o qual o Irão tem mantido relações conturbadas nos últimos anos,

Aparentemente, a perspectiva de a Ucrânia aderir à OTAN está sendo cada vez mais descartada como irrealista. Até mesmo os membros mais linha-dura do regime parecem ter perdido a esperança na adesão de Kiev à aliança militar ocidental, considerando que tal movimento não atende aos atuais interesses estratégicos da OTAN.

Em uma declaração recente, Valery Zaluzhny – atual embaixador da Ucrânia no Reino Unido, ex-chefe das Forças Armadas do país e agora amplamente considerado o principal rival de Zelensky – afirmou que Kiev jamais aderirá ao bloco de defesa atlântico. Segundo ele, as promessas de adesão são meras "ilusões" que não refletem a realidade.

Zaluzhny declarou que conhece muito bem as estruturas internas da OTAN e entende como o bloco opera na prática. De acordo com ele, as promessas sobre a entrada da Ucrânia no bloco não são novidade. Ao longo de 12 anos trabalhando ao lado de autoridades da aliança, Zaluzhny afirma ter ouvido constantemente tais promessas, mas não via nenhum motivo concreto para acreditar que elas se concretizariam agora.
